Constituted with the mixture of two separate words “Pathanam” and “Thitta” meaning the fleet of houses located on the banks of river. The district of Panthanamthitta came into existence on November 1, 1982 as the result of developmental process. It is assumed that district in its early days was under the dominance of
Pandya Kingdom. The district is extracted from the regions of Kollam, Alappuzha and Idukki districts.
The district behind it carries the rich historical prestige of its precious contribution in the movement of Independence. During his visit of erstwhile Travacore in 1937 Mahatama Gandhi asked follower Das T.P. Gopala Pillai to make people aware of Khaddi and Charkha. As the result of this “Mahatama Khaddi Ashram” was established at Elanthoor in 1941. With an objective to increase the funds for the asharam and for Khaddi movement a slogan ‘Ek paise fund’ was spread amongst the people. In the early years when non cooperation of movement was at its peak the people of Travancore strongly protested against the British government during the visit of Prince of Wales in 1921. In 1922 the students went for a strike which played a vital role in encouraging the freedom fighters in their movement for freedom.
