Kerala is the origin state of several ancient arts which are performed as ritualized arts on several occasions. These include Kalaripayattu Kalari and payattu , which are observed as exercises or practices during the field. Though Kalaripayattu is observed as the world’s oldest martial art forms whereas theyyam and Poorakkali are another ritual art forms.
Both ritualized and modern sports are popular and played in the state. Among modern sports cricket, football, badminton and kabaddi are the most popular. The state too owns many large open grounds and stadiums to cater these activites. Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi and Chandrashekharan Nair Stadium in Trivandrum have already set the marks through their world class facilities.
Boat Races of Kerala are world famous due to their annual celebrations, entertainment and spirit of the sports. Kuttanad and upper Kuttanad areas are popular for the boat races. Nehru Trophy boat race, Aranmula boat race and Champakulam Moola Boat races are the major boat races of Kerala.
Kerala has given top most players like Sreesanth from cricket, footballers include M.Vijayan, C.V Pappachan, V.P. Sathyan, athletes like P.T.Usha, T.C. Yohanna, Suresh Babu, K.M. Beenamol and Anju Bobby George and Jimmy George from Indian Volleyball team are the great players those represents the contribution of state Kerala in various games on a national level.
