The history of Kerala is not a modern history but it dates back to ancient period when Sanskrit was considered as language spoken in the Indian continent. The mention of Kerala is found in the ancient Sanskrit epic Aitareya Aranyaka where specific mention is given about this state of multifarious features. The Indian epics like Ramayana and Mahabhartta also have mention about the existence of Kerala. The ancient Indian puranas have also the mention of Kerala.

Kerala is located in south west of the Indian continent. Surrounded by the Arabian Sea on the west and the mountains of the Western Ghats on the east the state is blessed with the bag of natural resources.

The major achievement of Kerala is in the field of education. Kerala is the first Indian state to achieve almost 100% literacy rate. According to the census of 1991 the literacy rate of state was 94.59%, this percent is more than double to that of the country. This makes Kerala to stand on the top as compared to the literacy rate of the most of the developed countries of the world.

The initiative for this progress in education goes to the early rulers from the period of famous ruler Ravi Verma Kulasekhara (1299-1314), at that time it was known as Kollam which was the capital of Venad and became the best centre of learning and cultural.
